William Carey Memorial High School

Bangladesh is a densely populated growing country. The needs of the  increasing population are hard to meet. Still many people are deprived of  basic rights; especially people in remote areas. The statistics of the Human Development Index (HDI) report of 2015 revealed that 61,5% of the population of Bangladesh, older than 15 years, is able to read and write. Within society however, the literacy rate among the population can vary greatly. Carey Memorial High School (CMS) children receive education from an early age, which is the first step to higher education in the future.

The school was established in 1799, by Dr. William Carey (1761-1834), a British missionary. Carey came to India to share the Gospel. He shared the gospel mainly in the Eastern parts of India, known today as Bangladesh. (During Carey’s life time, Bangladesh was still part of India.)  Having lived in India for a while, Carey realised that education is key to develop and improve people’s situation.  People were lacking education due to the cast system, and therefore their socio-economic situation would not improve. Carey strongly believed that the message of the Gospel and good education for boys and girls in this area, would make a difference and impact the development of individuals, their community and society positively. With this goal in mind, he started a school, providing free access to education for children, both boys and girls, which was revolutionary at that time. Years later, he translated the bible into Bangla, which greatly contributed to the education development in Bangladesh.

The school  continues  to provide education for children of underprivileged socio-economic and religious background. At present, more than 500 students receive education, from Kindergarten up to class nine. Having graduated from High School, many continue in higher education in colleges or vocal training centers.

Because of the financial support of Liebenzell Mission, the reputation of the school has increased due to the provision of education through qualified and well-trained teachers.

The school arranges cultural programmes and education programmes throughout the year (Study tours, school picnics, science fair, sport events, debating clubs, celebrating national holidays etc.).
